The Student Engineers' Council at Virginia Tech directs the Engineering Expo - an entirely student-run career fair that is the largest on campus and the 2nd-largest student-led career fair in the United States.
Industry attenders and sponsors of the Enigneering Expo allow the Student Engineers' Council to fund over 80 engineering design teams and support the Virginia Tech College of Engineering through student scholarships, philanthropy, and social events.
In April 2024, I was selected as the Engineering Expo Chair, a full-time contractor role spanning Summer through early Fall 2024. In this role, I directed all logistics and operations of the career fair and spearheaded company recruitment, ensuring continued financial support for the College of Engineering and its student teams.
In the role, I negotiated sponsorship deals with major industry partners, including but not limited to Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Altec, Dominion Energy, Deloitte, and RTX.
To expand company recruitment, I developed automated outreach tools using AirTable, Excel, and HTML. These tools took in recruiter and company information - such as the contact's first name, company name, and company purpose (indicating relevant engineering majors) - to generate personalized messages at scale, significantly increasing response rates and engagement from prospective sponsors.
Through my efforts, the Engineering Expo hosted over 250 companies, providing opportunities to 6,800 Virginia Tech engineering students and resulting in over 1700 students securing internship and full-time roles.
During the career fair, I co-led a 14-member executive board and over 100 volunteers to manage all event operations, including event security, recruiter parking and catering, bus and van logistics, and compliance with school and fire department safety standards. By ensuring a smooth execution and a high-quality experience for more than 2000 recruiters, recruiter approval ratings increased from 85% in 2023, to 94% in 2024 during my tenure, ensuring higher retention rates for the future of the career fair.
